On Tuesday, 19 August 1930 twelve railway workers gathered in the boardroom of the head office of the ZA Railways in Cape Town. That same evening the Afrikaanse Taal- en Kultuurvereniging (ATKV) was founded.
At first the Association was treated with suspicion with cutting remarks and discrediting from mainly English newspapers. Railway workers in senior positions, being afraid of losing their jobs, distanced themselves from the ATKV.
Despite the adverse climate, a few enthusiastic individuals opened a branch office in Johannesburg on 03 October 1930.
Monthly meetings were held during which music, poetry and the arts were discussed. |
Since 1930 the ATKV has grown from strength to strength to where today, 82 years later, this vast organisation wishes to share its diverse cultural expertise with the world.
